Charles Seliger: The Nascent Image – Recent Paintings is the artist’s sixth at Michael Rosenfeld Gallery and focuses on twenty-nine paintings completed between 1992 to the present. The paintings, intensely detailed, small-scale organic abstractions (measuring no larger than 18" x 14"), are meticulously rendered with acrylic on masonite panels. In describing his work, Seliger states that he attempts "to apostrophize micro-reality. I want to tear the skin from life and, peering closely, to paint what I see. I want my brain to be come a magnifying lens for the infinite minutiae forming reality. Growth is the poetry of all art."

For more than fifty-five years, Charles Seliger has passionately pursued an inner-world of organic abstraction, celebrating the structural complexities of natural forms. According to art historian Mel Lader, Seliger "has taken Abstract Expressionism beyond its physical gesture into a space and form articulated and rearticulated with inexorable attention and detail, reinventing it with nature’s own infinite variety and indomitable character and beauty."

Throughout his career, Seliger has actively exhibited in the United States and abroad. In 1945 at the age of nineteen, Seliger had his first of two solo exhibitions at Peggy Guggenheim's gallery Art of This Century. His first major museum exhibition was in 1949 at the De Young Memorial Museum, San Francisco, California and in 1986, he was given his first retrospective exhibition at The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. His work is represented in numerous museum collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, National Museum of American Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Michael Rosenfeld Gallery, LLC is the exclusive representative of Charles Seliger.
