Press Release

Burgoyne Diller: Pioneer of Abstraction is the first New York exhibition of Burgone Diller's art since his 1990 retrospective at the Whitney Museum of Amerian Art. Burgoyne Diller: Pioneer of Abstraction will include important paintings, drawings and constructions from 1935 through 1963 and will offer an understanding of the artists development from early cubist-inspired compositions to his better-known geometric abstractions.

Burgoyne Diller, among the most significant American abstract artists of the twentieth century, is regarded as a leader of the avant-garde in the 1930s and a forefather of the 1960s Minimalist movement. As head of the New York WPA/FAP Mural Division, member of the American Abstract Artists group and educator at Brooklyn College, Diller influenced artists, students and the public with his

commitment to abstraction. As Diller explained, abstraction was "the ideal realm of harmony, stability and order in which every form and spatial interval could be controlled and measured."

Burgoyne Diller is represented in numerous museum collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is the exclusive representative of the Estate of Burgoyne Diller.
