To coincide and compliment the landmark exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power scheduled to be on view from July 12 to October 22, 2017 at The Tate Modern, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery (MRG) will present in its first Frieze Masters main booth nine prominent artists that contributed significantly to the shaping of a “black art” movement in the United States. MRG will feature Benny Andrews, Romare Bearden, Edward Clark, Beauford Delaney, Sam Gilliam, Norman Lewis, Betye Saar, Alma Thomas, Bob Thompson, Charles White and William T. Williams; each of these artists will also be included in the Tate Modern exhibition, conceptualized by curators Mark Godfrey and Zoe Whitley to investigate how ‘black art” was defined, rejected and redefined by artists across America. Paralleling the Tate focus, MRG will include artworks dating from the 1960s to the early 1980s and all works on display will be exhibited in the UK for the first time.
