One of the most admired and collected artists of his generation, Ben Shahn (1898-1969) was a painter, photographer, printmaker, muralist and political activist, who is best known for his poignant narratives of American life. Often capturing controversial public figures and historical landmark events, his work serves as an expose of American history. Ben Shahn: Freedom of Speech, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery's first solo exhibition featuring the work of Ben Shahn, includes a choice selection of tempera paintings and works on paper from the 1930s and 1940s. Subjects of work include Huey Long, Barry Goldwater, Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. and several mural studies for public commissions completed.
